Odin Teatret/ Thebes at the time of yellow fever

It is Odin Teatret's last work, a sort of partial testament before starting (perhaps) something else, elsewhere. It is certainly the perfect theatrical conclusion of a cycle, of a poetics, of a working technique, of an experience spanning almost sixty years. "Thebes at the Time of Yellow Fever" is a poetic performance of great visual suggestion, recited in ancient Greek with the exception of a few phrases in Italian, which guide the spectator. A performance punctuated at times by singing, at others by the rhythm of verse. From time to time a familiar name or word is heard: Oedipus, thanatos, Sphigx, Antigone. They represent an additional foothold with the story of the myth, but it remains necessary to surrender oneself to the sound of the words and gestures of the actors. It is the day after the battle, the war between the two sons of Oedipus for the rule of Thebes is over. The rebellious Antigone has been punished for violating the law of the city. The families bury their dead, among whom the ghost of Oedipus wanders. Creon and Tiresias arrange peace, the Sphinx ascends the throne. For the young it is spring, time to fall in love. The future is a frenzy of sun and gold: a yellow fever.
