Bartleby the scribe - Leo Gullotta

"Whoever has never failed in any field, that man cannot be great. Failure is the true test of greatness ”. Word of Herman Melville, author of "Bartleby the scribe", the story that inspired the play of the same name by Emanuele Gamba, which sees Leo Gullotta as the protagonist on the stage of the Politeama Greco. The scene opens on to the gray and bare spaces of an ordinary office: time flows in the same way as always, between two employees who hate each other and argue over the centimeters of space on their desks, a flirtatious secretary, an intrusive cleaning lady and a lawyer, employer, kind and anonymous. Until one day a new employee is hired: a scribe.
Bartleby diligently copies and compiles the papers that his master passes him but, for no apparent reason, at some point something breaks, jams, freezes. From that moment Bartleby will answer any question or request with the same sentence: "I would prefer not". Undaunted and unperturbed, he will continue to do so without giving explanations, without accepting reasons and help. A sort of total resistance to that world that fights for success around him, smiles toothy, tries to assert itself. In all of this, he denies, he denies himself. “As if he, poor Bartleby, symbol of divine poverty, carried on his shoulders the mourning for the titanic and delirious anxieties of victory and expansion of our world”.
