Christmas in Lecce/ Artistic nativity scene in Piazza Duomo

A simple people of peasants, shepherds and artisans seemingly fixed in awe at the birth of Jesus comes to life in the sacred heart of the city. In Piazza Duomo, the magic of the large artistic nativity scene organised by the City Council is repeated. The backdrop to the installation is the sacred architecture of the square among which a glimpse of the Salento countryside comes to life. Dry-stone walls, three 'pagghiare', Mediterranean scrub, paths, wells, a small citrus grove, a building in Lecce stone and even a fountain with gushing water are the rural context in which the traditional Nativity scene is set, surrounded by various characters: no less than 14 statues, seven of which were made just this year by the Epicochi papier-mâché master. The nativity scene occupies about 500 square metres of the square and is illuminated by more than 50 lighting points. The large installation will be inaugurated in the presence of the mayor and the bishop at 6.30 pm and can be visited in the embrace of the square until 8 January.
