The smell of things I have lost/ Emanuela Monda

The smell of things is the map for finding traces in memory of the mother, the partner, of pieces of life, that are no longer there. People, places, images and sensations now lost live vividly in memories, in a sort of olfactory hyperthymesis of the protagonist of Emanuela Monda's L'odore delle cose che ho perso (Bertoni edizioni). Marisa Forcina, a lecturer at the University of Salento, meets the author in the spaces of the OgniBene Library to explore with her the sense of smell that brings us back home, that brings back memories from the past, from the unconscious. The novel, set between Taranto and the Salento coasts, recounts relationships, encounters and clashes in the protagonist's existence through the filter of odours. The falling in love and the deterioration of feelings towards her partner, the relationship with her mother, first between women and then between parents, are dissected in a constant and often convulsive conversation with herself, in the deepest analysis of her own self.
