The poetry of Nicola Giuseppe De Donno

The poetry of Nicola Giuseppe De Donno

With 'The poetry of Nicola Giuseppe De Donno', 'From orality to writing: the Salento dialect in contemporary artistic expressions' kicks off, an event promoted by the Biblio-museum in collaboration with Milella editrice. Carlo Alberto Augieri, Luigi De Luca, Camillo De Donno, Antonio Lucio Giannone and Simone Giorgino will take part in the meeting, dedicated to the investigation of the Salento language. Nicola Giuseppe De Donno, considered one of the most significant exponents of 20th century neo-dialectal poetry, was born in Maglie in 1920. After graduating in philosophy from Pisa, he worked on the magazine Belfagor. He gave up the university post offered to him by the Normale and became headmaster of the Liceo 'Capece' in Maglie. He published numerous essays on Pascal, Bergson and national history. A scholar of popular culture and customs, he is the author of no less than 13 collections of poetry in dialect. In De Donno's poetry, the local dimension rises to a universal paradigm and dialect has no less poetic potential than Italian, allowing him to tackle challenging civil and social themes, as well as philosophical and metaphysical ones.
