The invisible fire/ Daniele Rielli

The invisible fire/ Daniele Rielli

Two books in one, a family novel and a reportage on the desiccation of olive trees in Salento caused by Xylella. 'Il fuoco invisibile. A human history of a natural disaster', just published by Rizzoli, is the latest literary effort by Daniele Rielli, a writer of Gallipoli origins. The author talks about it with the mayor of Lecce Carlo Salvemini, Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia journalist Francesco Gioffredi and director and screenwriter Alessandro Valenti in the meeting organised by Libreria Palmieri, in collaboration with the Polo Biblio-museale. It all begins in 2010 in Salento, where it suddenly happens that the olive trees quickly wither away first by hundreds, then thousands, and finally millions. The squares are invaded by demonstrators, protesting against the containment measures identified by the institutions. On social media, the very scientists who discovered the disease and sought remedies to combat it are being accused. More than 20 million trees have died, it is as if the entire province of Lecce had been burnt by a gigantic invisible fire, losing its deepest identity and turning from an earthly paradise into a boundless and desolate vegetable graveyard.

Free entrance.
