Strade Maestre/ Tropicana

Summer 1983: 'Tropicana' is all the rage in the Italy of discos and bonfires on the beach, jukeboxes in bars and street parties. The Italian group's song dominates the record charts and becomes a cult, a symbol of summer, a hymn to carefreeness and joie de vivre, a group dance par excellence. But what is this song really about? Francesco Alberici and Gli Scarti/Frigoproduzioni question what becomes the artist's objectives, they ask themselves within what margins of freedom is it allowed to operate, if even the work of art must abide by and respond to the logic of the market, like any other 'commercial product'. Using the piece and the experience of the Gruppo Italiano in a paradigmatic manner, the performance opens up a reflection on the relationship between art and the market, in a short circuit between real and imaginary identities, in which each performer seems to be outing his or her own hopes, aspirations and more or less secret weaknesses.
