Strade Maestre/ Giovinette. The female footballers who challenged the Duce

Rosetta, Giovanna, Marta. They all have Giuseppe Meazza as their idol. They are the friends who in 1932 founded the Milanese women's football group, the first football team in Italy made up of women. In the midst of the 20-year fascist period, this rapidly growing group, which was written about in the newspapers, alarmed the regime. There was little point in the fact that the 'young girls' took to the field wearing knee socks and a black skirt so as not to offend morals, that they gave themselves shorter playing times, that they used a rubber ball instead of a leather one, that they only agreed to pass the ball low to the ground and to put teenage males in goal so as not to compromise their 'primary function, that is, their reproductive capacity', as a certain consequence of the balls. They are still women and football is a manly sport, the stuff of men. It is a story of friendship, sport and struggle that of the Milanese girls pioneering football. The first official match, set for 11 June 1933, is not played due to a ban by the authorities, but they win anyway.
