The Seasons of the Oles/ The Spring Concerts

The second of 'The Spring Concerts' is Easter. The Oles performs in the Rosario Church, conducted by Bari maestro Sabino Manzo. Guests are the solo voices of Valeria La Grotta and Margherita Rotondi, supported by the Lecce Opera Choir of Vincenza Baglivo. The concert is dedicated to two giants of Salento baroque music: Pasquale Cafaro and Leonardo Leo. The former was born in Galatina in 1715 and spent much of his life in Naples, held in high esteem in court circles and enjoying the king's favour. He composed oratorios, operas, cantatas, theatrical and sacred music, taught and directed performances of various operas. Leonardo Ortensio Salvatore de Leo, on the other hand, was born in San Vito dei Normanni in 1694. Considered to be among the greatest exponents of the Neapolitan school of music, it was in the Neapolitan city that much of his career took place. Organist of the royal chapel, he was soon appointed chapel master of Santa Maria della Solitaria, for which he wrote much of his church music. Leonardo Leo's 'Il figliol prodigo', a cantata for soprano and strings, will be performed, while Pasquale Cafaro's famous 'Stabat Mater' from 1785 for four voices, soprano, mezzo-soprano, choir, string orchestra and basso continuo will be performed.
