Pueri Cantores

The sacred aisles of the cathedral host the Pueri Cantores of the Pontifical Sistine Music Chapel, part of the 14th edition of the "La voce degli angeli" festival. The festival, under the artistic direction of Lucia Rizzello and Luigi Bisanti and in co-production with the "Tito Schipa" Conservatory of Lecce, has the peculiarity of having "angel voices" (treble voices, sopranists, contraltoists) within the choirs and of promoting musical and cultural events of rare programming with modern-day premieres of unknown musical pages from the Baroque period, by composers from Salento and the Neapolitan school. The Pueri Cantores papal choir, on the other hand, dates back to the 6th century, when Pope Gregory the Great established a school of child singers to accompany the adult ones in papal celebrations. The choir is characterised by an unmistakable timbre, closely related to Renaissance sonority, but also impressive in the repertoire of other periods. The 29 children of which it is composed are today the flagship of the Pontifical Musical Chapel. In Lecce, the choir is accompanied by organist Jhosep Solè-Coll and conducted by maestro Michele Marinelli.
