La notte della Taranta

Back in 1998, a small stage in Piazza San Giorgio in Melpignano hosted native musicians who brought together a small number of lovers of Salento popular music. Twentyfive years later, the Notte della Taranta Festival is an event of international caliber, which boasts musicians from all over the world, and on its stage it saw concertmasters such as Stewart Copeland, Ludovico Einaudi, Goran Bregovic, Dardust, Madame and many others. The 26th edition, coordinated by Fiorella Mannoia, is dedicated to the memory of one of its longest-lived and most passionate artistic directors, Luigi Chiriatti, and involves more than 400 guests including musicians, dancers, actors, writers and philosophers. But, above all, the Notte della Taranta is a traveling popular festival, and on August 14 its musical webs intertwine around the marina of the Baroque capital of Salento. San Cataldo, on the Da Verrazzano (right in front of “molo di Adriano”) coastline hosts Mario Incudine, an all-round artist, great exponent of Sicilian popular music, with Peppe Servillo with his 40 and beyond years of musical career, both solo and with his band Avion Travel; along with them, the Orchestra Popolare della Notte della Taranta will fill the square with the sounds and rhythms of Salento popular culture and beyond.
The evening's program, curated by the La Notte della Taranta foundation, starts at 8 pm with the pizzica workshop organized by the “Corpo di Ballo della Taranta”. A special workshop that involves the public near the sea. The appointment is part of the "L'Umanità dell'acqua" (“Humanity of the water”) project in collaboration with Acquedotto Pugliese.
