Camerata Musicale Salentina/ The Land of Bells

At the Camerata Musicale Salentina it is operetta time. 'Il paese dei campanelli', written by Carlo Lombardo and set to music in collaboration with Virgilio Ranzato, is a classic of the international repertoire for its timeless charm, light-hearted plot, evergreen music and dance, and rich costumes and set design. Once upon a time there was a small village in green Holland where there were small bells on the roofs of all the houses. Legend has it that these would ring if a woman betrayed her husband. No one ever heard them, but one day an English military ship was forced to dock in the harbour because of a fire that had broken out on board. When the sailors go ashore and start courting the local women, the inevitable happens. Engaging rhythms and hilarious jokes characterise this masterpiece of early 20th century Italian operetta, brought to the stage by the Compagnia Italiana di Operette.
