47th Opera Season/ La Tosca

47th Opera Season/ La Tosca

It is among the best-loved and most performed operas in the world. "La Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini, on the bill for the 47th edition of the Opera Season of Tradition of the Province of Lecce, is staged at the Politeama Greco, in a co-production with the Teatro dell'Opera Giocosa of Savona and the Fondazione Rete Lirica delle Marche. Renata Scotto, one of the great divas of international opera, directs the musical and dramaturgical text, assisted by Michele Olcese for the sets, while Gianna Fratta conducts the orchestra. Love and power in its most cynical forms are the main themes of the melodrama in three acts by the great composer, set in Rome in 1800. The opera tells the story of the singer Floria Tosca, lover of the liberal painter Mario Cavaradossi, who is courted by the papal police minister Scarpia. He imprisons the painter and blackmails Tosca: if she does not give herself to him, Cavaradossi will be shot. The story ends in tragedy, with Tosca stabbing the villain Scarpia, the painter being shot and Tosca, pursued by the police after discovering the minister's death, throwing herself from the ramparts of Castel Sant'Angelo.
