TEATINI CINEMA/ Licorice Pizza

On Wednesday, the "Teatini Cinema" review presents "Award-winning Cinema," or films that have earned prestigious awards at major film festivals. So the screen lights up on "Licorice Pizza," a romantic comedy starring Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits and Sean Penn. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson in 2021, it won best original screenplay at the Baftas, the British counterpart to the Oscars. The story takes place in Los Angeles in 1973. Teenage actor Gary Valentine meets 25-year-old photographer Alana Kane. She hands him a mirror and comb for his school yearbook photo, while he vows eternal love to her. She refuses, but he insists. What does the fanatical Gary believe in? What does the independent Alana rebel against? Ten years separate them, yet everything seems to unite them. They are irresistibly attracted to each other, but they do not know how to love each other. In fact, they don't even know if they love each other or just love the idea of loving each other. Their story unfolds between the oil crisis and the decline of Golden Hollywood, against the backdrop of the night in the San Fernando Valley.
