Angelo Filomeno. Works. New Millennium

Angelo Filomeno. Works. New Millennium

Embroideries, but also drawings, watercolours, plastic works and installations, all collected in the anthological exhibition, the first dedicated to the Italian-American artist, 'Angelo Filomeno. Works. New Millennium" at Must. The exhibition, devised by Must director Claudia Branca and curated by Massimo Guastella, lecturer in History of Contemporary Art at the University of Salento, traces his artistic production from 2001, the year in which he developed an autonomous and recognisable language with the singular, early 'embroidered paintings' with macabre themes, made with his inseparable Singer sewing machine, to the most recent works made in 2023, with barns and American circuses rich in polychromes. Filomeno, originally from San Michele Salentino, learnt the art of embroidery from his seamstress mother and, along his creative and educational path (he attended Professor Alfonso Siano's painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lecce), he has turned the ancient technique into art, grafting it onto painting and characterising it with mournful characters with strong symbolism: skeletons, beasts, insects, body limbs. The evolution of his artistic style has then included crystals, muslin, denim always poised between the meticulousness and care of a craftsmanship almost lost in time and the disturbing contrast of a macabre prediction.

The exhibition can be visited every day except Mondays from 9 am to 9 pm; from 15 October, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 7 pm; Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to 8 pm.
