The Carlo V Castle in the history of the Jews of Lecce - special tour

From the prisons of the Charles V Castle to the ancient medieval Giudecca, a multicultural place where Jews, Albanians, Greeks and other communities lived since 1451 in what is now the heart of Baroque Lecce, a few steps from Santa Croce. The special tour organized on the occasion of the "Day of Remembrance" is organized by Through the Castle and The Monuments People: a journey through the streets of the city and inside the manor, to get to know the time when the three Jewish communities present in Lecce, from Germany, Greece and Spain, had their own rituals and cults. There were 26 thousand Jews present throughout the Salento area, mostly leather tanners, bankers, traders and soap producers. The soap artisans, in particular, almost all concentrated in the street adjacent to Palazzo Taurino, vico della Saponea, which takes its name from this activity. Here, some of the private homes still have some tubs for the production of soaps. In this way we move in the wake of the guides between the Stories and the stories still wedged between alleys, walls and streets.
Meeting point: inner courtyard of the Carlo V Castle. Cost: 8 euros. Info and reservations: 335/7009614.
