The artistic nativity scene in Piazza Duomo

It has the attractive force of a magnet. Every small street in Lecce these days leads into the embrace of Piazza Duomo where a real glimpse of rural Salento seems to have come from the past or rained down from the sky. The great artistic nativity scene is different every year but every time it gives precious suggestions.

In the days preceding the blessing by the bishop, the square is a small construction site where various workers work hard to rebuild the dry stone walls, stone by stone just as they used to do in the past, the characteristics "paghiare", the well, the paths. All in the embrace of the trees and plants of the Mediterranean scrub that characterize the Salento landscape. The result is a real glimpse of the countryside that peeks out in the ancient and sacred heart of the city. The setting is cradled in the gaze of the saints of the cathedral and in the embrace of the square.
