Opening and visits to the Roman Amphitheater

Opening and visits to the Roman Amphitheater

It can be admired every day and at any time, simply, looking out from the balustrade that surrounds it a few steps from the central Piazza Sant'Oronzo, but for the feast of April 25, exceptionally, the Roman Amphitheater opens to visitors to let themselves be discovered also from within and more closely. The ancient cavea built to host fights between gladiators and "hunts", discovered in the early nineteenth century and whose unveiling and restitution to the city radically changed its "urban face", is a real treasure trove of stories and suggestions . According to the most accredited hypotheses, the original layout dates back to the Augustan age while the portico "in summa cavea" was erected in the Hadrian period. The opening for the Liberation Day will allow you to enter its "bowels" and inside ambulatory where various marble elements that once decorated it are preserved, and the continuous frieze, partially recomposed, which shows hunting scenes, "fights between fairs" and "bestiarii".

The Amphitheater can be visited from 10 to 13 (last admission at 12.30).

Free entry. Reservation required.
