On the streets of papier-mâché

Beyond the Baroque and the monuments, Lecce hides its true soul in the alleys and lanes of the historic centre. To get to know it, you can join the guided tours, offered by The Monuments People association in collaboration with the “Pro Loco”, which explore the ancient art of papier-mâché. The itinerary leads through the history of the masters of the ancient art, a Lecce trademark, the places and the technique of the precious works that still embellish the votive shrines and churches of the city. Through the folds of history and tradition, the barbers/papier-mâché artists story is told, and the “fairs of the baskets” are recounted; until you reach the workshops where you can peep and observe live the work of the masters, continuing on to discover their works in the Baroque churches: from the church of Santa Chiara to that of Santa Teresa, passing by the cathedral.
