Viva Calvin/ The Difficult Loves.

Viva Calvin/ The Difficult Loves.

"Of course the cost to be paid is high, but we must accept it: not being able to distinguish ourselves from the many signs that pass through this street, each with its own meaning that remains hidden and indecipherable, because outside of here there is no longer anyone capable of receiving and understanding us." For the monthly "Viva Calvino" events, poet and writer Dario Goffredo reads excerpts from "Gli amori difficili," a collection of fifteen novellas written by Italo Calvino between 1949 and 1967. Many were first published in 1958 in the anthology volume "I racconti," specifically in the last two sections, titled as the two parts of this collection, "Gli amori difficili" and "La vita difficile." In June 1970 the collection of short stories was released by Einaudi. Calvino speaks of inner movements and journeys toward silence, understood as the difficulty of communication always present at the bottom of human relationships, but also as a precious commodity and tool of true understanding. "The Difficult Loves" are stories of how a couple does not meet, and this not meeting is a reason for disorientation and anguish, but at the same time it represents the cornerstone of a love relationship, if it does not even coincide with love itself.
