Viva Calvin/ Marcovaldo

Viva Calvin/ Marcovaldo

For "Viva Calvino," the solo show dedicated by the OgniBene library to the Havana-born intellectual, this month's meeting is with "Marcovaldo," read by writer and cultural worker Osvaldo Piliego. Released in 1963, "Marcovaldo ovvero Le stagioni in città" is a collection of twenty short stories, some of which were previously published in episodes by l'Unità. The protagonist of the stories is Marcovaldo, a naive, sensitive, creative, rather funny and melancholy laborer, a lover of nature and distressed by economic problems. His adventures are set in a big city, elected as a symbol of all others. Characterized by concrete, smokestacks, smog, skyscrapers and traffic, Marcovaldo is its prototypical citizen. The Sbav company, at which he works, is also the quintessential company. A symbol of all the others, precisely because of this we do not know what he produces, nor the contents of the packaging, which Marcovaldo moves and transports all day long. The stories deal with such crucial issues as chaotic life in the city, haphazard and irrational urbanization, growing industrialization and consumer society, the poverty of the lower segments of the population, and the difficulty in human and interpersonal relationships.
