Viva Calvin/ American Lessons

In the centennial year of Italo Calvino's birth, the OgniBene Library is organizing monthly "Viva Calvino," a series of meetings dedicated to the Cuban-born Ligurian writer with public readings from his novels and community reflections. It begins with "American Lessons," read by writer and cultural worker Simona Cleopazzo. "American Lessons. Six Proposals for the Next Millennium" includes a group of short essays, prepared by Calvino for a series of six lectures for the 1985-86 academic year at Harvard University, which never took place. A stroke suddenly struck the writer, who made it in time to complete all but the last of the planned lectures, the sixth. The book was published posthumously in 1988. Each lesson takes its cue from a literary value, which Calvino believed was fundamental and the basis of literature for the new millennium, namely "Lightness," "Rapidity," "Exactness," "Visibility," "Multiplicity," and "Coherence." The order of the lessons is not random, but follows a descending hierarchy. It starts with the main characteristic and proceeds with the discussion of the gradually less important ones.
