Prison seen from the inside

Prison seen from the inside

The numbers, the situation of women, children, foreigners and minors, work, training and schooling, alternative measures and probation, agricultural colonies and electronic bracelets. These are just some of the topics covered in the 18th report on conditions in Italian prisons, published by the Antigone association, which has been carrying out the observatory on detention methods for years. This year's data show that the official average crowding rate is 107.4 percent, but in some regions it is significantly higher. These include Puglia, with 134.5 percent, followed by Lombardy with 129.9 percent.

This will be discussed at the meeting "Prison seen from the inside," in the Cloister of the Augustinians, organized by the Municipality of Lecce, Welfare Department and Antigone Association. The topics addressed will also focus on alternatives to prison and collaboration between institutions to ensure rehabilitating punishment paths. Speakers will include Silvia Miglietta, Lecce City Council Welfare Councillor; Alessandro Stomeo, Antigone Lecce attorney; Mariateresa Susca, director of the Lecce Correctional Facility; Giuseppe Mastropasqua, president of the Lecce Surveillance Court; and Maria Mancarella, guarantor of the rights of persons deprived of their liberty of the city of Lecce. Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia journalist Erasmo Marinazzo will moderate.
