Edoardo Albinati, Francesca D'Aloja/ Vite in sospeso (Outstanding lives)

"You see, migration is like water. You block a point and it starts dripping somewhere else'. Edoardo Albinati and Francesca D'Aloja present their 'Vite in sospeso', published by Baldini+Castoldi. The poet and writer (Strega prize for 'La scuola cattolica') and the actress, director and writer have collected their reportages from the borders following the missions of the UN Refugee Agency-UNHCR, travelling along some stretches of the infamous 'Balkan route'. Amidst tent cities, misery and the risky game of crossing hostile borders (curiously called 'the game'), groups of people try to reach Europe, through a route strewn with suffering, humiliation, traps, deceit and brutality. Those fleeing misery and war (more often than not, both) face it as their only chance to preserve their lives or build a better one. "We are not animals, we are not criminals", are the phrases they often repeat. Because, despite their physical and moral wounds, the protagonists of this book demonstrate an extraordinary vitality and the firm determination of those who are just trying to regain their dignity.
