Donne ingannate/ Giuliana Sgrena

"Is the Islamic veil a symbol of women's oppression or an expression of her freedom? I have no doubts and I believe I can prove it in this book: it is certainly the symbol of oppression, albeit in different forms and shades. The free choice of wearing the hijab, invoked in the name of religion, tradition and / or identity, basically responds only to the male obsession with the woman's body ". The incipit unambiguously clarifies the meaning of "Women deceived - the veil as religion, identity and freedom" by Giuliana Sgrena, historical correspondent of the Manifesto in the war theaters of the Middle East and Africa. After the greetings of Anna Caputo, president of Arci Lecce Solidarity, the journalist and writer presents the book, talking with Maria Chiara De Gaetano of Casa delle Donne and Lucilla Pagnani, president of the Arci Alveare club, on the theme "Under the veil there is always a woman, behind however there is always a man ".
Critical reflection on the theme of the female veil extends to the relationship between freedom and religion, to the cultural and ideological hypocrisy of that part of the West that ends up legitimizing female oppression in the name of cultural relativism. Even in so-called "advanced" societies it has become easier to defend the freedom to wear the veil rather than not to wear it.
