Country churches in the province of Lecce/ Michele Mainardi

Farmers used to go there to refresh their souls and limbs exhausted by fatigue: in the little churches, temples and chapels that dot the Lecce countryside in great numbers. They have survived the inexorable passage of time as solitary stone testimonies to a time gone by, to the religious spirit that animated the workers of the land, to the peasant civilisation of the Salento. They are neglected, tampered with and often battered, silent cultural assets that still have much to say and give. They deserve to be valorised and known, if not for their architectural value, at least for their significance in terms of the history of the territory, of genuine faith, of devotion authentically lived. The book "Chiesette di campagna in provincia di Lecce" (edizioni del Grifo) will be presented by author Michele Mainardi, with speeches by the president of the Puglia Regional Council Loredana Capone and Luigi De Luca, director of the Lecce Biblio-museum Pole.
