Cosimo De Giorgi, a model citizen/ Livio Ruggiero

Cosimo De Giorgi, a model citizen/ Livio Ruggiero

The Lecce section of the Società di storia patria inaugurates the social year by presenting Livio Ruggiero's book 'Cosimo De Giorgi, un cittadino modello' (Cosimo De Giorgi, a model citizen), published by Milella. Arcangelo Cosimo De Giorgi, born in Lizzanello in 1842, was a doctor, researcher, teacher and scholar with encyclopaedic interests and knowledge. He was involved in the artistic, landscape and architectural census of Terra d'Otranto's heritage, and in the study and restoration of the most important monuments in the current three provinces of Salento. To him we owe the restoration of the portal of the Church of Saints Niccolò and Cataldo in Lecce and, above all, the discovery of the Roman amphitheatre in the capital of Salento. He is also credited with founding the meteorological observatory in Lecce in 1872 and with inventing a seismograph model, which bears his name. The meeting will be introduced by Mario Spedicato, president of the Lecce Sspp. Speakers: Anna Stomeo and Paolo Protopapa, both members of the Società di storia patria di Lecce.

Free entrance.
