Augustinian Books/ The gallows, the stake and the axe

In times of cancel culture, which demonizes without contextualizing, Enzo Ligori performs the reverse operation: he tries to rehabilitate the figure of Ortensio Abbaticchio, a doctor, alchemist and alleged heretic from Cutrofiano. There is news of him mainly in the manuscript sources of the Vatican Archives. Incarcerated in Naples on charges of Calvinist heresy, he in turn blamed his own inquisitors for plotting against Pope Pius IV, instructing them to prepare the poisonous potion intended to eliminate the pontiff. Tried in Rome and subjected to rope torture, he resisted for a long time, finally giving in and confessing while still "pulled." He was convicted of slander, but the sentence of hanging on the Sant'Angelo Bridge was not carried out until June 1566, when the new Pope Pius V resumed his persecution of heretics. For Agostiniani Libri Enzo Ligori presents his book "La forca, il rogo e la mannaia" (Manni), dialoguing with Mario Cazzato, Marcella Rizzo and Gaetano Gorgoni.
