Augustinian Books/ Cassandra in Mogadishu

Augustinian Books/ Cassandra in Mogadishu

Igiaba Scego, journalist and writer, was born in Rome in 1974 to Somali parents exiled by Siad Barre's dictatorial regime. "Cassandra in Mogadishu" (Bompiani) is her and in her book she mixes the Italian language with the sonorities of Somali to describe the malaise, the trauma, that characterizes all those who experience the uprooting of a diaspora.  Its pages are at once a letter to a young niece, a historical account, a family saga, and an alchemical workshop, in which suffering is transformed into hope through the thaumaturgic power of words. Like a modern-day Cassandra, the author abandons bitterness over injustices suffered and cries of unheard pain and chooses to recount our common past and present, celebrating brotherhood and the possibility of forgiveness, healing, and peace. Igiaba Scego dialogues with editor and writer Simona Cleopazzo. The meeting is produced in collaboration with Spreading Valuable Ideas, Conversations on the Future and Idrusa Bookstore.

Free admission.
